Insight Into the Scriptures
Today we start Deuteronomy. The author of Deuteronomy is Moses and was written around 1407 BC. Moses and the Israelites are poised at the east side of the Jordan, in view of the Promised Land; Canaan. Deuteronomy takes a moment to remind the people how faithful God had been to them, and to encourage them.
As I was reading today's chapters I could not help to think that the people I was reading about were children. But, in fact these were grown men and women acting like children in front of God.
As I was reading the introduction into Deuteronomy, the Life Application Bible gave a great key verse for this chapter, and I thought that I would share it with you."Know therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands." - Deuteronomy 7:9
Scripture Reading Deuteronomy 1:29 - 36
29 Then I said to you, 'Do not be in dread or afraid of them. 30The LORD your God who goes before you will himself fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness, where you have seen how the LORD your God carried you, as a man carries his son, all the way that you went until you came to this place.' 32 Yet in spite of this word you did not believe the LORD your God, 33 who went before you in the way to seek you out a place to pitch your tents, in fire by night and in the cloud by day, to show you by what way you should go.
The Penalty for Israel's Rebellion
34"And the LORD heard your words and was angered, and he swore, 35'Not one of these men of this evil generation shall see the good land that I swore to give to your fathers, 36except Caleb the son of Jephunneh. He shall see it, and to him and to his children I will give the land on which he has trodden, because he has wholly followed the LORD!'
Thought for the Day
Deuteronomy is the start of a new generation of Israelites. If you remember, God was so fed up with the older generation, He told them that none of them would enter into the Promised land. Deuteronomy is a history lesson for the newer generations of Israelites; their successes, and failures.
This is the thought that came to mind as I was reading the text today; are you stuck in a rut? Are you stuck in committing the same sin over and over again, and just can't seem to enter out of it? As you will read, it seems like the Israelites kept on committing the same sin over and over again. Notice how many of God's blessings they missed out on.
God wants the best for you, He wants to bless you, but He does need your trust and obedience to the few laws that He put into place for your own protection. If you believe that you are stuck in a rut of sin, you need to put your life into 4 wheel drive and get out of the rut. Getting out will be different to everyone. To some it might be digging in God's word more, to some maybe personal accountability, to some getting involved in church, maybe you just need to reach out to another believer. Whatever motivates you, you need to move out of your rut and into God's blessings.
Closing Prayer
My Heavenly Father,
Thank you Father for the many blessings You graciously give to me everyday. Thank You Father for listening every time I pray.
Father I know that we are all sinners, but I want so much to do good for You. I pray that You will give me the strength to step out of my sinless nature and be more like You. Please help me to always remember what I need to strive for and that is faith in You!
