How Is Your Prayer Life?

How Is Your Prayer Life?

God tells us in His Word to pray without ceasing. What does that mean to you?How is your prayer life? Are you satisfied or maybe it is time to make some changes in your prayer life with God?

Some time ago God laid a verse on my heart. I meditated on it for some time and the Holy Spirit told me that my prayer life left something to be desired. I was only praying when I needed something or when I was in trouble. After much thought these are some of the changes that I made in my prayer life.

To me prayer is like a phone call. If you only call someone when you need something soon the person you were calling would get tired of your phone calls (Thank God we have such an amazing and patient God). A good phone call is when you talk and listen. A good phone call is when you talk about everyday life. I believe that God loves to hear about your problems, but He also loves to just chat.

My other problem was that I view prayer to be a time alone in a very quiet place. I believe that you need this time, but it does not satisfy "without ceasing." So how do you solve this? I started talking to God about EVERTHING. When I was at work I would talk to God about how I should build this end cap (I worked at Family Christian Stores). When I was driving home and some nice guy would cut me off, I would tell God how mad that made me. When I was at home watching TV I would ask God if He thought it was funny. I started to include God in everything I did. It was very simple and really took no effort at all, but I cannot tell you the peace that I started to feel and how much it improved my relationship with God.

So again, how is your prayer life? Are your "phone calls" one sided? I hope my suggestions can help draw you closer to our very cool GOD!

If you are interested in reading a great book on this subject check The Practice of the Presence of God out by Brother Lawrence. I read it and it changed my prayer life.

How To Pray To Jesus

How To Pray To Jesus

I would guess that Jesus was praying all the time to His FATHER. The Bible makes references when Jesus prayed, but this prayer is the most well known.

I thought we would take a look at this prayer in this devotional and maybe we can apply some traits of Jesus' into our prayer life.

When Jesus was sorrowful and troubled he went to His FATHER in prayer.
This for most of us, I would imagine, would be a given. But, notice how Jesus went into solitude, fell face down and prayed. When you have something troubling you, you need somewhere alone with Jesus. There is nothing like going alone with Jesus in silent prayer.

Related Article: How Do I Pray

I do not know about you, but I have had people tell me that you do not need to repeat yourself when you are praying. They have told me that if I repeat myself, it is like I am not trusting Jesus to help me or answer my prayers. I did not know how to feel about this, until I read this passage. Jesus prayed for the same thing three times (See verse 26:44)

The last thing that I found interesting, is the openness and honesty of Jesus. Yes, I know that Jesus was open and honest all the time, but in His Prayer to GOD he shows His anxiety, and apprehension. Jesus knew what was going to happen, He knew all the pain that He was going to have to endure, and He expressed it to His FATHER.This is key to your prayer life. Pour out every fear, apprehension, and anxiety to Jesus, lay it at His feet. Leave it there, and walk away knowing whatever the outcome, Jesus knows the best for you and your life.

Matthew 26:38-44
"Then he said to them, "My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch with me."And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will." And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, "So, could you not watch with me one hour?Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done."And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again."

How Do I Pray?

How Do I Pray?

How Do I Pray?
Pray then like this: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts,as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil."

Thought for the Day
I thought that I would share with you one area that Jesus has been working on in my life. It is my prayer life. Most of my life, my prayer life was a prayer routine, prayer request line. Prayer was something that I did at the end of the night, as an after thought, usually it went something like this: "Oh yea, I forgot to pray today....... OK...... Ah.......

Dear Jesus, Thank you for today, I am feeling tired, please give me strength. Please watch over Kim, Mom, Dad, and my sister. Please help tomorrow be a better day. I love you.In Jesus name Amen."

Does any of that sound familiar to you? Lately, I have been trying to make prayer what it was intended to be; a form of worship, and communication with GOD. Now, when I pray, I always spend a couple of minutes in the beginning to praise GOD, and worship him. Imagine calling your best friend on the phone, when they pick up the line, you just start to talk, talk, talk.... I want this, help me with this, have a good day, bye. If you had conversations like that with your friends on the phone, I do not think you would have too many more phone conversations.

If you are wanting to jump start your prayer life, or you have been praying for years, let's take a look at the way Jesus told us to pray in Matthew 6:9-13.
Our Father in Heaven,

1. Hallowed be your name
2. Your kingdom come
3. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
4. Give us this day our daily bread
5. And forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors
6. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

There is a reason that Jesus told us this and there is a reason that it is in that order.
1. We need to cherish the name of GOD above all things in our life. Pursue the glory of GOD, praise HIM!
2. We pray here that Jesus' saving and purifying will would be done in our lives as well as the earth.
3. We pray that Jesus would give us strength to do His will without hesitation and fear. By doing this our lives as well as the earth's will be changed.
4. We pray that Jesus will provide for our DAILY needs.
5. Pray and ask forgiveness for our sins through Jesus, who made the ultimate sacrifice. Then ask for strength to apply the same forgiveness that GOD shows us, that we can show others.
6. Pray for protection from the evil one and the daily temptations. That we would be amazing witnesses for Him.

I pray that by taking a look at these simple verses, that we may have heard thousands of times, help you jump start or realign your prayer life again.

One Sided Prayer Life

One Sided Prayer Life

Psalm 29 is the psalm that I would like to focus on today. How is your prayer life? It seems like when we become busy our prayers become shorter and shorter and more to the point. Usually that point is what we need.

One Sided Prayer Life
"Dear Lord, Please help me at work today, I need money so I can pay my bills, please give me patience with my kids today, help Aunt Suzie get over her sickness, Amen."

Does that sound familiar? Let me give you another example. When our son was alive most of the time, life revolved around his needs. Dad, I need money, why do I not have a cell phone, I am having trouble with a kid at school, Mom is being unfair, No, I do not want to do that....... and on and on. I do not mind answering him or being there for him, that is why GOD chose me as a parent, but sometimes I would like to just talk to him, no struggle, no wants, just talk back and forth.

There is no way that I am even comparing myself to GOD, but I can imagine that is how GOD feels at times. He LONGS to just talk with you. These psalms are a great way to just talk with GOD. A majority of the psalms are songs and prayers just praising GOD, if you do not spend some of your prayer time praising GOD I would encourage you to do so. We serve such an amazing GOD, if you spend time thinking about HIM, it just humbles you.

Alot of the Psalms were written as prayers and songs to GOD. They were written by men who were seeking the face of GOD, praising GOD, and crying out for help. I believe that we should read them as they were meant to be.

Below is Psalm 29, it is a wonderful psalm praising HIS majesty. Do not read the words, pray them to the LORD!

Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name;
worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness.

The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
the God of glory thunders,
the LORD, over many waters.
The voice of the LORD is powerful;
the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.

The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf,
and Sirion like a young wild ox.

The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.

The voice of the LORD makes the deer give birth
and strips the forests bare,
and in his temple all cry, "Glory!"

The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
May the LORD give strength to his people!
May the LORD bless his people with peace!

The Trowel And The Sword

The Trowel And The Sword

Have you ever created something, only to have it destroyed? If you answered yes, you need the trowel and the sword. Today, we are going to read chapters 4 through 6. To bring you up to speed with the story, the walls that were built to protect Jerusalem the city, the church, and the people was destroyed. The city was destroyed. Nehemiah and a band of believers that were called to rebuild the wall...... really the city, GOD's city.

Starting in Chapter 4 Nehemiah starts to have opposition, then in chapter 5 Nehemiah has to take care of an internal problem that came in the way. Chapter 6, Nehemiah saw more resistance to building the wall, even a threat to his life (6:10), but, towards the end of the chapter they finish the wall in 52 days (6:15).

Bringing the Bible Alive
Throughout biblical times the sounding of the trumpet; or shofar, was used for signaling. In Nehemiah's case, if the shofar was blown, all the people would gather as one, for protection (4:18).

In biblical times people could not go into debt as we can today. They would sell their children into slavery to pay off their debt, hoping to redeem at a later time (5:1-19).

Nehemiah was a leader and business man, he was not a Levite or priest. It would have been wrong for him to go into the temple as he was told to do. He would be breaking a commandment of GOD (6:10)

Scripture
"Those who carried burdens were loaded in such a way that each labored on the work with one hand and held his weapon with the other. 18 And each of the builders had his sword strapped at his side while he built. The man who sounded the trumpet was beside me." - Nehemiah 4:17-18 ESV

Charles Spurgeon
Thought For the Day
Charles Spurgeon wrote a book, The Sword and the Trowel. I am sure that you know what a sword looks like, but do you know what a trowel looks like? A trowel looks like a pointed spatula. It is a tool that is used while laying brick, it lays the cement between the bricks, it also smoothes and removes the extra cement...... it is used for building things.

So, maybe instead of calling this devotional The Trowel and the Sword, we could call it Build and Protect. Let's face it, life is work...... it is building things. Whether it is a family, business, friendship, church, marriage, savings account, retirement, you name it. your life is spent building things. Do you protect it?

If you are a Believer, you have an enemy! satan and his band of demons are REAL. They would love nothing more than to tear down ANYTHING that you have spent time building up. Nothing would bring them more joy then to see you discouraged, tired, hopeless, and ready to give up.

So, my question again, are you protecting what you are building? You might
Submit Your Prayer Request
ask, how can I protect what I am building. First, without getting spiritual, I believe you need to use common sense. Do you trust the people you are working with? Have you researched your project? Are you making an effort to work on your marriage day by day? If you are dating, are your goals the same?
Second, is your spiritual life firmly planted in Jesus Christ? Are you in constant communication to Jesus all day long? Do you know your Bible? Remember when satan tried to destroy what Jesus was building? (His Church) satan tempted Jesus in the desert, how did Jesus respond? With Scripture!

I will leave you with a couple of closing thoughts that you can take today to think over. What are you building right now? Is it protected? What has GOD called you to build? How can I defend it? These two thoughts should go hand in hand. Please post your comments below.

Closing Prayer
Dear Jesus
Father of love, peace, grace, kindness and forgiveness, just to name a few, thank You for Your words and Your teachings. Father I pray that I can continue to grow in You. I pray that I can seek Your help and hear Your voice and be there for those around me. Please give me the strength Father to carry on through my day and protect what is dear to me. Help me to never be discouraged.
I love You and I pray in Your Name, Amen

Everything Starts With Prayer

Everything Starts With Prayer

How do you start a project? I have learned that it starts with prayer. Boy, I love the book of Nehemiah! Nehemiah was an amazing leader. Let me start and give you a little background on the book. Ezra and Nehemiah were orginally written as one book. The time that is was written was 446 BC. Jerusalem had been attacked by the Babaloyins, the city was DESTROYED; like New Orleans. Nehemiah was just an ordinary guy, doing an ordinary job, like you or I, but he allowed GOD to open his heart up and make a huge difference. The time is winter......

Bringing the Bible Alive
As we read the Bible, it always seems so far away, does it not? But, the situations, and the people are a lot like us today.

Take Nehemiah for example, they were a people living in a bad time, their city has just been destroyed as some of our cites are destroyed by situations beyond our control. The people back then were looking for the coming of a Messiah, as we are today. Nehemiah was just an ordinary person, just like you or I, but he opened up his heart to GOD as we should and started with prayer. GOD used him to accomplish an amazing task, as GOD could do in us.

So, next time that you think the Bible was sooooo long ago, really look at it, I am sure you will see things and realize were not much different.

Submit Your Prayer Request
Scripture
When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Then I said:"O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and obey his commands, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father's house, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

"Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.'

"They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand. O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." - Nehemiah 1:4-11

Thought For the Day
Now, that I have given you the historical facts of Nehemiah, let me give you the heart of Nehemiah.

Nehemiah is not just another book of the Bible, it is a personal journal of Nehemiah, we need to read it such. It is not just about rebuilding the wall of Jerusalem, it is rebuilding a city, a home. This is GOD's home here on earth, it was the city that HE was going to set apart and set as an example for all mankind to see.
Join Our Facebook Family

When Nehemiah heard of the news of Jerusalem (1:3) he broke down and wept, mourned, and fasted. Nehemiah was not saddened for a couple of days, he was saddened and troubled for 3 to 4 months. But, the news that Nehemiah heard was 141 years old! This would be like us getting upset over the news that President Abraham Lincoln died...... it was old news. That is how much Nehemiah cared about the city!

Now, that we have looked at the heart of Nehemiah, let's look at how he handled the task of rebuilding the city....... He started with prayer. The first thing he did is drop to his knees and PRAY. Not just any prayer, but, a heart filled with love, prayer. In his prayer, Nehemiah exalts GOD, asks to be heard, confesses his and the sins of his people (Notice how he did not put the blame on anyone). Quotes scripture from the promises that GOD had made his servant Moses in Deuteronomy. Then asks GOD to give him success..... what a prayer!

When you are facing a task..... any task. What do you do first? Do you start it with prayer? I would have to say that I would start to plan (Not pray), I would get everything lined up. I think that we all can learn from Nehemiah and how he approached his task, and how he approached GOD in prayer. Let me put a little "Food for thought" in you mind. Nehemiah/GOD accomplished in 52 DAYS..... DAYS what others tried to accomplish for 141 years. Do you think prayer works?

Closing Prayer
Dear Jesus
Amen for prayer Father. I pray a simple prayer Father. I pray that we can all learn to just pray a simple prayer, not fancy words or thoughts, just love and words that we would ask from a friend sitting right in front of us. Father I pray that we can all just speak to You with an open heart and mind and casual words, words simply to our Father.
I love You and I pray in Your Great Name, Amen

The Power of Prayer

The Power of Prayer
Prayer is your dilaog with God, and there is power in prayer! It is a way to talk to God and tell him that you are concerned, the most important is a way to thank God for all that He does for us.

Prayer is very powerful and the power of prayer can work miracles. God hears your prayers always, the main thing that they came from your heart and not with empty words, prayer should come from the heart and the soul and should be sincere prayer without faith is like a fish out of water, like a man without air, prayer must be full of faith and sincerity, prayer should resound in your heart, and should be strengthened by faith and love for God and Jesus.

Every man praying to God must first of all thank Him for all that He gives us
Sumbit Your Prayer Request
and that we do, always try to be honest with God, He always sees and knows it, because from God nothing is impossible and you can not hide, God our Creator and He knows our every step. Ask God to forgive your sins, and do it sincerely, with all my heart, God always hears and sent sincere prayer with faith, he always knows how sincere people. Always try to think not only of themselves but of their neighbors, their friends and those who need help and who is around you, pray for them, ask God to help those who have gone astray, have lost their way to return to the fold.

Prayer is powerful and it brings you spiritually with God, helps you to understand yourself, if you have difficulty or something bothers turn to God, pray, open your heart to God and Jesus, let the God in your heart and you will feel how easy you will, your soul rest in the heart will become light. Prayer is one hundred force that helps a person to tell God about your concerns, and ask God to help get rid of the temptations and the thoughts that bother you, prayer provides the opportunity to tell directly to God about what is going on in your heart and if the prayer is sincere and strengthened by faith that God will hear it and will show you the way.

My friends do not forget to pray. Prayer is not hard. What has worked for me is to say breath prayers. All during the day I will talk to God. For instance when I see a person on the street that needs help, I will say a short breath prayer for that person.... "Lord, please help that man." That is is, nothing long or hard, just what is on my mind. Soon you will find that you are praying all day long. Soon you will find a deep connection with Jesus.

Pray, praise and thank God and Jesus, pray for the salvation of souls, pray for the redemption of sins, let your prayer be sincere about they get to God. God bless you!
